OS Ecology Ltd is a professional and independent ecological consultancy committed to the delivery of environmentally sound, practical and economical solutions for all our clients. 

We are a CIEEM Registered Practice dedicated to providing a high standard of surveys, reports and advice across a wide range of ecological fields to enable our clients to deliver their projects ensuring compliance within these areas with planning and legislative requirements relating to ecology. 

We aim to develop relationships with our clients working with them to cultivate creative solutions that achieve success both for our clients and the environment.

Our ecologists have more than 40 years combined experience.

We have dealt with a large range of projects including:-

  • small scale extensions and / loft conversions,
  • renovation projects
  • small, medium and large-scale housing developments,
  • large scale infrastructure projects,
  • mineral extraction,
  • research and conservation project,
  • conservation of heritage assets. 

Using this knowledge and experience we are confident that we can provide advice suited to any client’s needs.

Our ecologists are all members of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management, and both of the directors of the company are Chartered Ecologists.  We have extensive experience in working with protected species including bats, great crested newts, birds, white clawed crayfish, freshwater pearl mussels, natterjack toads, badgers, otters and water voles. We also have experience in surveying a wide range of habitats and are able to provide advice on habitat, creation and management. 

At any one time we hold several mitigation and conservation licences from Natural England and Nature Scot for our client’s projects for a range of species including bats, great crested newts, white clawed crayfish, freshwater pearl mussels and badgers, allowing projects to proceed legally and ensuring that the conservation status of these species is maintained during the work.

OS Ecology has extensive experience of completing Biodiversity Net Gain assessments utilising the Defra Metric including undertaking initial feasibility studies, providing advice as to how the requirements of Biodiversity Net Gain can be addressed within developments.

We have experience in preparing Ecological Impact Assessments and Ecological Chapters for Environmental Statements for a range of developments including mineral extraction, residential development and renewable energy schemes.  Our ecologists have been involved in preparing Habitat Regulations Assessments for development affecting Special Protection Areas and Special Areas of Conservation, again for a range of different types of development including infrastructure, residential and commercial projects. 

OS Ecology Ltd is based in northern England but we work throughout the country and our ecologists have experience of delivering projects in a range of geographic locations ranging from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to central and southern England.
